Exploring Watercolour Techniques
Suggested Art Supply List
All art materials are included in the first class of this course. In the first class Jessica will go over this material list. You will need to buy your own brushes for classes 2-4. You have the option of paying Jessica $20 to cover cost of the rest of the art materials used during the classes or you can buy your own.
This supply list is a suggestion only, to give you an idea of the colours and materials I use. Please bring your own palette and brushes that you would normally use.
Paints – I use a good artist quality watercolour like Winsor Newton (WN). Some of the colours listed are Winsor Newton (WN), but any brand is fine. Any artist brand, or student brand can be used together. Colours do not have to be exactly as listed, but try to match as best as you can. Here is a list of some the main colours I use (the ones in bold are my favourites):
WN Permanent Rose (red should look more magenta than orange), WN French Ultramarine, WN Winsor Yellow, WN Winsor Blue, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Quinacridone Gold, Brown Madder, Sap Green, Aureolin Yellow, Paynes Grey or Indigo
Brushes – Please bring what ever you would normally use. Here are some that I use;
Variety of rounds such as; series 700, #5 or #6 and # 8 or #10
Angle brush series 725, ¼”
Flat, series 968, 1“
Filbert, series 620, size 4
Filbert, series 880, ¼” – ¾“
Paper –
Canson XL Watercolor Pad - 9” x 12” (any size is fine) – Can be found at Opus or Micheals
Optional: 100% rag/cotton, Cold Press, 140 lb 22” x 30” x 1 sheet, cut up into quarters of 11” x 15” Jessica will have quarter sheets (11” x 15”) available for $3 each in the classroom if you run out.
Misc -
Palette with lots of flat areas for mixing, one with a lid is preferable (Opus has a small folding palette for $3.90)
Knead-able eraser, 1“ green painters tape or masking tape, HB Pencil, Kleenex or paper towel
Fine tip black waterproof pen – such as Pigma micron 005-03 (I like a variety of sizes for thickness)
Board for taping watercolour paper on to – 12” x 16”; use a wood board that has been sealed so the water doesn’t
affect the board, or gatorboard 12” x 16”, found at Island Blue for approx $11.95 per sheet. (Please note that this gatorboard is found at the art store, and it is not used in construction.) Opus carries a board called "The Incredible Art Board" which is 16" x 24" and is $27.50. You can use this size or cut it into two. If you are fine to tape your paper, any sealed wood or plastic board is fine. If you would like to stretch your paper use gatorboard, the incredible art board, or make sure the wood board you purchase is at least ½” – ¾” thick to be able to staple your paper on to. Stretching your paper is not necessary for this class.
*I have boards available for you to use in the classroom. You can tape your paper on to them, but you must remove your painting at the end of the class.
Sketch book – optional
Removable Frisket or art masking fluid - optional
(Island Blue and Artworld will give you 10% off if you mention you are in classes at Poppet Creative. Opus will give you a 20% coupon for a one time purchase with your registration.)
