Suggested Art Materials List
This list is a recomondation only. If you have your own materials already please feel free to use them in the workshop.
Paints – Student quality watercolour will work, but if you can, choose a good artist quality watercolour like Winsor Newton (WN), M Graham or Daniel Smith. (5ml seems like a small amount, but it will last you quite a while in artist quality) Any artist brand, or student brand can be used together.
WN Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Magenta (make sure your red is cool, not orange)
WN French Ultramarine
WN Winsor Yellow or WN Aureolin Yellow
WN Winsor Blue (Green shade)
Quinacrodone Gold
Burnt Umber - optional
Burnt Sienna - optional
WN Scarlet Lake (Warm Red) - optional
A variety of watercolour brushes such as;
Round, series 700, # 8 or #10
Angle brush series 725, ¼”
Flat, series 968, 1“
Filbert, series 620, size 4
Optional – Round, series 700, #5-#6
Optional – Filbert, series 880, ¼” – ¾“
Paper - 100% rag/cotton, Cold Press, 140 lb 11” x 15” x 1 sheet; a have your paper stretched for the workshop. Please bring extra scraps for testing your colours. I will have quarter sheets (11” x 15”) available for $3 each in the classroom if you run out.
Palette with lots of flat areas for mixing, one with a lid is preferable
Knead-able eraser, 1“ green painters tape or masking tape, HB Pencil, kleenex or paper towel
Board for mounting watercolour paper on to – 12” x 16”; use a wood board that has been sealed
so the water doesn’t effect the board, or Gatorboard 12” x 16”, found at Island Blue for $11.95 per sheet. (Please note that this gatorboard is found at the art store, and it is not used in construction.) If you are fine to tape your paper, any sealed wood board is fine. If you would like to stretch your paper you will need gatorboard or make sure the wood board you purchase is at least ½” – ¾” thick to be able to staple your paper on to. Stretching your paper is done prevent the wc paper from buckling while you work on it.

- Island Blue’s has 100% rag 140CP Fabriano wc paper 140 CP, 22 x 30 cut into quarters is 11”x15” – $8.35
- Opus has a package called “Opus Finest WC paper” 100% cotton, 11” x 15”, 20 sheets for $31.50
- Paper is expensive so if your budget doesn’t allow you to buy cotton paper, then buy a pad of watercolour paper that is 140lb cold pressed, 11” x 14”.
