When I was little my best friends were cats. You would often find me drawing with a cat curled up beside me.
This was a commission I recently finished that I am mailing today for a couple that live in the United States. I am sad to see it go, but I am thrilled that it is going to a good home. I did a demonstration yesterday at Opus Victoria in Oils. I described the process of working from a photograph for landscapes. Photographs can be difficult to work from. It is easy to get caught up with detail. We talked about simplifying the image into shapes to create an interesting composition using thumbnails to start. This can save you a lot of grief later on, especially when you are just learning to paint. The planning stage can be just as in important as the painting stage. I also talked about painting often and small. It is easier to take risks and try something new when you work small, and of course every time your brush hits the canvas you learn something new. Just show up, and see what happens!Join me at Opus on May 27th as I take you through the process of planning and painting a landscape in oil. I will go over the steps of simplifying a photograph into a strong composition while using thumbnails to help eliminate potential problems. I will then explain how I approach colour and the layering process, as well as how I play with the paint in simple forms to create a unique oil landscape. This demonstration will give you tips and tricks on how to plan out your oil painting and get past any fears you have about a blank canvas.
