BEGINNER WATERCOLOUR
ART MATERIALS LIST
All art materials are included in the first class of this course. In the first class Jessica will go over this material list. You will need to buy your own brushes for classes 2-4. You have the option of paying Jessica $20 to cover cost of the rest of the art materials used during the classes or you can buy your own.
This list is a recommendation only. If you have some of your own materials already please feel free to use them.
A variety of watercolour brushes such as;
Round, series 700, # 8 or #10
Flat, series 968, 1“
Angle brush series 725, ¼”
Optional - Filbert, series 620, size 4
Optional – Round, series 700, #5-#6
Optional – Filbert, series 880, ¼” – ¾“
Paints – Student quality watercolour will work fine, but if you can, choose any good artist quality watercolour like Winsor Newton (WN). (5ml seems like a small amount, but it will last you a while in artist quality) Any artist brand, or student brand can be used together. Colours do not have to be exactly as listed, but try to match as best as you can. Please avoid cadmium colours.
Permanent Rose or Quinacridone Magenta (colour should look more magenta than orange)
French Ultramarine
Primary Yellow (not Cadmium Yellow) such as Winsor Yellow
Payne’s Grey or Indigo
These paints are not necessary for the class. These are optional colours you can purchase later to add variety to your paint selection:
WN Winsor Blue (Green shade) - optional
Burnt Umber – optional
Paper –
Canson XL Watercolor Pad - 9” x 12” (any size is fine) – Can be found at Opus or Michaels
Optional: 100% rag/cotton, Cold Press, 140 lb 22” x 30” x 1 sheet, cut up into quarters of 11” x 15” Jessica will have quarter sheets (11” x 15”) available for $3 each in the classroom if you run out.
Misc - Palette with lots of flat areas for mixing, one with a lid is preferable (Opus has a small folding palette for $3.90)
Knead-able eraser, 1“ green painters tape or masking tape, HB pencil, Kleenex or paper towel
*Optional - Board for taping watercolour paper on to – 12” x 16”; use a wood board that has been sealed
so the water doesn’t affect the board, or gatorboard 12” x 16”, found at Island Blue for $11.95 per sheet. (Please note that this gatorboard is found at the art store, and it is not used in construction.) Opus carries a board called "The Incredible Art Board" which is 16" x 24" and is $27.50. You can use this size or cut it in half. If you are fine to tape your paper, any sealed wood or plastic board is fine. If you would like to stretch your paper, use gatorboard or make sure the wood board you purchase is at least ½” – ¾” thick to be able to staple your paper on to. Stretching your paper is not necessary for this class.
*I have boards available for you to use in the classroom. You can tape your paper on to them, but you must remove your painting at the end of the class.
