Employment History

Apr. 2004 to present. Dr. Allan Carroll, Canadian Forest Service, Victoria, BC.
Forest Entomology Technician.

  • Team member - planned, designed and conducted experiments to evaluate susceptibility of forests to bark beetle infestations through evaluation of bark beetle population pressure and stand morphological characteristics.
  • Adopted flexible field procedures based upon current conditions (e.g. number of samples collected).
  • Designed and conducted a life history study of a relatively unknown bark beetle species.
  • Initiated and maintained experimental bark beetle populations in a laboratory environment.
  • Honed ability to identify field trapped bark beetles to genus and species.
  • Perfected tree health assessment procedures and identification of attacking bark beetle species through gallery recognition.
  • Trained and supervised technicians in field methods as well as bark beetle identification and rearing.
  • Developed strong competencies in research methods and analysis including univariate and multivariate, linear and non-linear statistical methods.
  • Acquired dendrochronology assessment skills to assess tree characteristics pertinent to bark beetle ecology.
  • Carried out literature reviews of insect life history strategies, competition and bark beetle ecology, focusing on mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) and associated secondary bark beetles.
  • Assisted in wild winter moth (Operophtera brumata) collection and laboratory rearing, as well as rearing of Douglas-fir tussock moth (Orgyia pseudotsugata) for Orgyia pseudotsugata nuclear polyhedrosis virus trials.
