Jessica
Milne is from the Comox Valley and grew up painting, drawing
and taking photographs. Her active outdoor lifestyle has
been a great influence and inspiration in her work. Throughout
her childhood she was balancing her time between visual
expression and riding horses, canoeing and skiing. At the
present moment, Jessica's goals are to create and sell visual
images and to produce illustrations for children's books.
In her work, she has found an interesting visual language
that combines both fine art and illustration.
Jessica
completed a double diploma in Fine Art and Graphic Design
in the spring of 1998 from North Island College in Courtenay
for which she received the Governor General's Award for
outstanding achievement. She went on to the University of
Victoria where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
with Honours in the fall of 2001. Jessica has taught adult
drawing and painting classes through Island Blue, a reprographics
and art supply centre in Victoria, British Columbia.
Following
her graduation from the University of Victoria, Jessica
had her first solo show in the Victoria Community Arts Council
Gallery. She has also been accepted in the Sooke Fine Arts
show for August of 2002, and 2003, and recently in the first
annual Sidney Fine Arts show in September 2003. In the spring
of 2004, Jessica illustrated a young reader's novel called,
"Jeremy and the Enchanted Theater" for Orca Book
Publishers. This book included one colour cover with 15
black and white illustrations.
Drawing
and painting are often interchangeable, reflecting similar
ideas of emotion and mood through color and light. The personality
of each character is expressed in a unique style with playful
line and texture. Jessica's landscapes can be seen as interesting
backdrops for stories or stand on their own as aesthetic
compositions. Regardless of what medium she uses, she is
on a journey of visual expression combining elements that
are both illustrative and aesthetically interesting.
